Implicit cost is the value/profit from the next-best forgone option.

Translation: What net income are we missing out on?

You go to the movies. The total price of tickets is $20. On the same night, you could've worked and earned $50 in income.

Implicit Cost = $50

You are missing out on $50 by choosing to go to the movies INSTEAD of working.

You go to the movies. The total price of tickets is $20. On the same night, you could've worked and earned $50 in income. You could've also babysat and earned $40.

We ignore babysitting ($40), because working the shift ($50) is the NEXT-BEST alternative. We make more money!

When given costs, revenues, profits, etc. and asked to calculate implicit cost...

Can you identify the next-best alternative and ignore all others?

Can you calculate the value/profit/income from that next-best alternative?

Can you ignore all values associated with the action you're choosing to take?
