A normal distribution is a symmetrical, bell-shaped curve that is unimodal, meaning that it has one peak. The area under a normal distribution is equal to 1.00.

Scenario: Consider the distribution of IQ scores, which is normal and has a mean (µ) of 100 and a standard deviation (σ) of 15.

Created with Statistics Kingdom

When we cut the distribution down the middle, it's a mirror of the other side.

It has one peak at an x-value of 100 (since that's the mean (µ) of all IQ scores).

The entire area (in red) under this normal distribution equals 1.00, or 100% of the data points.
