Scenario: Considering the following two events, solve for P(A).

  • Event A: Roll a number greater than 4
  • Event B: Roll an odd number

P(A) = # of outcomes in A / # of all potential outcomes

What is the sample space (S) for all outcomes on a six-sided die?

S = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}

SA = {5, 6}

P(A) = {5, 6} / {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6}
P(A) = 2 / 6
P(A) = 1/3

Answer: The probability of rolling a number greater than 4 is 1/3.
